bostonsteamer: Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Our first year hosting Thanksgiving dinner. We only have 11 people but in our little house it's pretty packed.
Перед отъездом зашел в гости. Из холодильника достали 25-летний массандровский протвейн. Вышел из поезда, добрался до временного дома, тут тоже портвейн. В частности, массандровский. 86-го.
Isaac's class did a science unit in fish, but now it's over and his teacher gave us some cloud minnows. One didn't survive his first day here, but the rest are OK so far. The boys used their "estimation" skills...
Oh good grief. Researching infant travel systems is frustrating!
Can we really be the only urban parents who might not have a car? Is there really no system that is lightweight, has ample cargo for my on-foot grocery shopping, has a cup holder, and has a seat that detaches to buckle into a cab instead of an installed seat base?
REALLY?!
What are NYC parents using? There must be something out there!
Ultimately we might get a car, but I'd really prefer not to think about that right now. If we don't sell the loft, there is just no way we can afford one. I would prefer to think that if we don't sell this loft, we will just build a tepee for the kid in the corner and have all systems go... car free. I mean, big deal, right?

- 18:54 I'm very excited for Clues rehearsal tonight! It's the one where I get to spill all the beans. #
whenever i wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, i'll almost always get caught up in reflecting about my life and the goings-on involved. what's bothering me and eating at my brain. i'll write emails and journal entries in my head, fully intending to make them a reality in the morning, before i fall back asleep.
when i do wake up the next morning, i almost always have forgotten what they were. it's probably a good thing, though; i don't think anyone needs to know what my mind kicks around at 3am.
haha. hello, livejournal. it's been a while.

I seem to be alone in not liking Queen... but I HAVE to like this:

At the Rendezvous with my shirt in the sink, I may have, at first glance, appeared to be trying to salvage a shirt from a stain. Relatively quickly, though, it would be come apparent that I was trying to cover it in blood as unobtrusively as possible while periodically making room for others to engage in appropriate restroom hygiene. Having arrived late to the pre-party costume session, I entered my friend's birthday party in a shredded paint-spattered plaid shirt, some borrowed pajama pants, and wearing hastily applied face-whitening makeup and fake blood. In the red light of the grotto, this read more "homeless" than "zombie", prompting the change to the back-up costume and upping the ante on dripped blood. Though in comparison to most of the other attendees, this didn't constitute taking it to the max, it was a definite improvement. For future reference, light colored clothing is the way to go for your zombie needs.

hi everyone,
My four year old woke up couple of times at night crying.. Eventually, she said that her ear hurts. In the morning i put some garlic oil in her ear and she said it no longer hurt, which is good. The bad thing is that her fever spiked up. She now has close to 102... There are no other symptoms.
Should i start calling her doctor? i don't want it to end up antibiotics even though my doctor is pretty good about avoiding them. FYI, my younger one had a one day fever on friday.
For now Dora is getting plenty of rest, has been drinking chicken soup..and just relaxing. She is weak and tired.. What should be my next step? Take her to do the doctor? or try riding it out?
If it's an ear infection, as long as it no longer hurts, i'd like to let it be.
Thank you...

Опускаешь два слипшихся кубика льда в Heering и торчит что-то около пятой одного из них. Ты знаешь заранее, примерно этого и надо ожидать, и каждый раз в этом чувствуется что-то удивительное.

I ran a half-marathon awhile back! With a hangover and about three hours of sleep, plus a two-hour pre-dawn drive during which I think I may have been hallucinating a tiny bit! I AM A MACHINE.
I AM A MACHINE THAT IS SLOWLY BREAKING DOWN INTO A PATHETIC, RUSTY HEAP:

When I started sketching this comic out last month, I was training for a marathon this coming Sunday. Then I got the flu. By the time I inked this thing (a few hours ago), I was training for a half-marathon this coming Sunday. Then I talked to my brother, and now I guess we are maybe going to struggle pathetically through a marathon on Sunday after all, never mind that the farthest I've ever run in my whole life was fourteen miles, about a month and a half ago. And my brother (who's run several marathons) ran eleven miles back in June, so yeah, I think we're all set here!
...
I'm just going to offer up this picture of my running shoes next to my climbing shoes and let you make your own guesses about how hideously malformed my feet are these days. Oh, you thought I just couldn't draw feet? THESE SHOES ARE BOTH SIZE EIGHT AND A HALF.
I HAVE THE WORST FEET.

Hi everyone. I saw this on CNN tonight and just thought others might be interested to know. It looks like it was mainly sold in the US and Canada. A crib is being recalled because the drop side can detatch unexpected and cause children to fall between the side and the crib mattress, causing suffocation.
So...just so people are aware. I understand a lot of people here cosleep, but for those who don't or who use a crib for naps, I thought you'd like to be aware.

I wish there was a social game that involved going to the gym during the dark winter evenings. I know
joshc thinks the Gym Rat badge on foursquare is the lamest thing in the world, even beating Love, Actually and 20 questions games where the answer is a spontaneously invented object, but so far that's about as close to social winter gym attendance game as it gets.
Ideas?

bostonsteamer: Decided that after-school care isn't working out. Anybody have any leads or recommendations for a nanny?
What do you do with your children's teeth when they fall out? My mother used to keep ours, but she has so much junk, they have been lost for years. I like my house to be simple, neat, and tidy. I like things to have a purpose. I don' t like a lot of clutter. I'd like to DO something with my kids' teeth rather than buy a little box for them that has to sit around gathering dust. I'm all about keeping a memory book for my daughter, but teeth don't fit in the book. Surely, people must do something not-too-creepy with all of the teeth that kids lose over the years.
The only thing I can think of (I'm Pagan, so this would only work for other Pagans, I guess) is to make them into some kind of a safety talisman for my daughter to have. I make them from other things and sew them into the toys I make for her and into the linings of jackets and such - just a lil' tip for the other Pagan mamas out there. ;)
But what do YOU do with them? Bury them under a tree?

ok i love this holiday because its the time of year i get to eat my favorite foods. greenburg smoked turkey, sweet potato casserole, and the best ever, CORNBREAD DRESSING!! i posted the recipe for it here last year and i know a few people made it so i thought i would post again if anyone wants to try it.
cornbread dressing
2 medium onions, chopped
4 stalks celery, chopped
6 cups crumbled cornbread (i use the jiffy brand cornbread mix)
3 cups toasted white bread cubes (you can buy the pepperidge farm) or you can cook some frozen biscuits and use them.
2 or 3 tsp poultry seasoning (find in the spice isle)
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
4 cups chicken broth
2 eggs lightly beaten
saute onions and celery in butter. combine all ingredients in large bowl stirring well. spoon mixture into lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish.
bake at 350 deg for 45 min or till lightly browned.
10 to 12 servings.
i always taste the dressing before putting it in the baking dish to make sure it's seasoned well.
