Thunderbird reply position

Sometimes I put up with computer stupidity much longer than I should. By default, Thunderbird positions the cursor at the bottom of the e-mail body when replying to an e-mail instead of at the top. I couldn't figure out how to change it, so instead I rewired my brain to press Ctrl+r, Ctrl+Home to reply.

Today I decided enough is enough. After a brief Google search I found the solution to setting the reply position on e-mails to the top instead of the bottom. The stupid thing is that it's not an application-wide setting, it's an account setting.

1. In Thunderbird: Go to "Edit > Account Settings" *
2. Select "Composition & Addressing" for the account in question
3. Make sure the "Automatically quote the original message when replying" checkbox is checked.
4. In the dropdown box below that, select the option "start my reply above the quote"

This worked for Thunderbird 1.5, ymmv

* update: on Windows, the option can be found in: Tools -> Account Settings.

update 2: If you're commenting to say "thank you": You're welcome!

Once again a helpful post!! Thank you!
Yup. I thought I was going to have to bail on Thunderbird. I'm so tired of MSquash that I would go whole-hog into open source but for the idiocy as shown by the default of an otherwise fantastic product being in the exact reverse of the entire universe of other mainstream messaging clients. What in the world are the Mozilla folks thinking with this oversight?

Anyway, with Google and fabulous users like "Joe", the open source experience is reasonable. But I've been on computers for 25 years so I've come to expect some tweaking. However, the majority of new users will not excuse anything that doesn't operate flawlessly out of the box. Chalk that up to 30 years of PC schooling (politically correct, union approved) that is.

Thanks again JOE!

Just another thank you
Heaven only knows why succesive versions of TB have this. Though I suspect there is a bunch of email purists that think messages should be managed like bulletin boards.

Good work...
There's probably some nerd sat somewhere thinking that commenting at the bottom of the previous email is the correct way of doing things... in the real world however I am very grateful that you have figured this out as it was doing my head in!!!
